Stepparent Adoption: We can assist if you would like to legally adopt your spouse's child or children after you marry. We terminate the legal parent's rights, coordinate with the investigative social worker, and complete all necessary legal work, including court appearances. Adult Adoption: California law provides that an adult can legally adopt another adult in certain circumstances. The adoptee's parents' rights do not need to be terminated. Often people choose to adopt an adult stepchild (over 18) because it is an easier process than the stepparent adoption of a minor, or a relative or someone close to them either for emotional or inheritance purposes.

Embryo Adoption: Adams & Romer is pleased to offer you a wonderful alternative to help you build your family: embryo adoption. Rather than adopting a child who has already been born, parents actually become pregnant and give birth to a child created with an embryo "adopted" from another couple. Such embryos are donated by couples who have completed infertility treatment and have unused frozen embryos. The embryos are then transferred to the mother during a laboratory procedure. Domestic Partner Adoption: We can assist if you would like to legally adopt your domestic partner's child or children after you register. As in stepparent adoption, we terminate the legal parent's right, if necessary, coordinate with the investigative social worker, and complete all necessary legal work including court appearances. California’s recent Proposition 8 (Prop 8) against same-gender marriage has no effect on this process, and our office is highly experienced in this area and prepared to discuss developments in this area with you in detail.

Relative Adoption: We can help you to legally adopt a relative who is a minor. We terminate the legal parents' rights, coordinate with the social worker who will conduct a one visit investigative study, and complete all necessary legal work including court appearances.

Re-adoption of Foreign Adoptions: We can assist you with filing your adoption papers in California to get an American adoption decree and birth certificate and ensuring California jurisdiction for your adoption.

Guardianship: We can assist you with becoming the legal guardian of a child. A guardianship gives you the legal authority to look after the well-being of a minor. There are several types of guardianships from which to choose, and the process of being named a guardian can be complicated and overwhelming. We take the worry out of the process for you — we will explain your rights and responsibilities, coordinate with the court or probate investigator, and complete all necessary legal work, including court appearances.
