Sue and Patrick

Dear Expecting Mother,

Sue and PatrickGreetings! Thanks for taking the time to learn more about us. We know that you are facing a difficult decision and we admire your strength and courage as you think about the future of your child. Hopefully this letter will answer any questions you have about us. We are absolutely thrilled at the prospect of starting our family!

Meet Patrick:

Patrick is very tall- 6’5”- that’s one of the first things I noticed about him- with bright blue eyes and a big smile. He is easy-going and takes everything in stride, never gets angry, and likes to have fun as much as he likes to work. He really makes me laugh which makes every day fun. When I get too serious or worried, he’ll crack a joke and everything is better instantly. It’s amazing what laughter can do!

Patrick grew up near Yosemite National Park so his love for the outdoors began at a young age. His father was a park ranger and helped Patrick develop into an avid hiker, camper, and wood-chopper! He Patrickmoved to San Francisco as a teenager and went to a Catholic high school there followed by Fresno State College. Patrick works as a banker, with his office in downtown San Francisco so it’s a really easy commute for him. In his free time, he loves to run, take our dog for a walk, read, and relax. Sometimes he even cooks dinner!

Meet Sue:

The first thing I thought when I met Sue was how completely beautiful she was- fortunately there is much more to her than that. Sue is someone that gives naturally – she cares about the elderly, animals and people in need. She volunteers at Friends of the Elderly and at the San Francisco food bank. She cries during TV shows like “extreme home make over” when a truly challenged and deserving family is in the spotlight. She is a great listener and is more interested in other people’s stories than telling her own. I always feel like I have her complete attention when we are together. Sue grew up in New Jersey, the youngest in a large family. I’ve never seen another large family that is so close. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Cheaper by The Dozen”, that’s what Sue’s family is like. After attending Villanova University, Sue lived in New York City and worked for HBO in sales, choosing to move to San Francisco for a promotion. Lucy Thirteen years later, Sue works as a real estate agent so she has a flexible schedule, working from home a lot.

Meet Lucy:

Another important part of our family life is our 5-year-old Labrador Retriever, Lucy. She needs a lot of exercise so every day, one or both of us, take her to the park or the beach for an hour so she can run, fetch, and swim. She loves kids but not as much as she loves cheese and chicken!

Where We Live:

We live in San Francisco, California, in a Victorian house right near Golden Gate Park. From our house, we can walk everywhere we need to go- parks, restaurants, grocery stores, playgrounds, schools, church, and an ice cream shop! We’re very close to a lot of great schools that focus on academics, sports, and having fun. We also have a home in Sonoma County on 11 acres. We spend about two weekends a month there gardening, relaxing on the deck, and really getting back to nature. From our cabin, you can’t see another house or road so it’s a great escape from the city. Our child will be able to chase the squirrels, build a tree house, and get really dirty!

In Our Free Time:

Our evenings and weekends are often spent seeing friends- we love to have friends over our house, make a big dinner, share stories and laugh a lot. We also like to exercise, so a few times a week we run, bike, do yoga, or just go for a long walk. We love being connected to the outdoors in the nearby beaches and parks. Our quiet time is spent reading mysteries.Extended Family and Traditions Sue goes to the library almost every week to keep us stocked with good books. And, once we have a child, she’ll get a separate pile of children’s book- from Dr. Seuss to Nancy Drew. And, we do like watching our favorite TV shows as well!

Our Extended Family and Traditions:

Sue’s immediate family is very large - she is the youngest of seven children - and has fifteen nieces and nephews and 4 great-nieces/nephews. Most live in or near New Jersey which is why we visit the east coast a few times a year including Christmas. This is an important tradition for Sue’s family. We go to church, exchange gifts, play games, and eat a lot and every once in a while get to play in the snow. We also visit friends in New York City and visit museums and Central Park, and every summer we visit the Jersey shore. A few of Sue’s family visit us every year too.

Patrick’s immediate family consists of his dad, who lives just a few hours away near Yosemite National Park, and his sister, who lives near San Francisco. Thanksgiving is spent with Patrick’s family here in California. Through out the year, we take mini-vacations to Tahoe or Sequoia National Park and hike, ski, and roast marshmallows on an open fire. We love to travel, experience new people and places and would love to share this with a child.

Raising a Child:

Sue and PatrickTo us, parenting means providing unconditionally love and creating a healthy, happy environment where our child can thrive. We will encourage a child to try lots of things, visit new places, so he/she can figure out what he/she enjoys doing. We believe that if you have hobbies and passions, life is a much richer experience. Sue will be a stay-at-home mom in the beginning and then will increase to working part-time. We will either have a nanny come to our home or part time day care.

Faith is very important to us and we are active in our faith community, especially since our church is right next door. We understand that raising a child involves love, infinite care, attention and patience, and we will devote ourselves to providing these things.

Providing a good education is one of our most important goals. Everyone in Sue’s family graduated from college with many of them, including Sue, obtaining graduate degrees too. In Patrick’s family, his mother had high expectations for him to graduate from college. She felt that “paths” are opened by committing to education. We feel the same way and we will encourage our child to reach for the stars and help them get there in every way we can.

We will always be open with our child about his or her origin, and we will discuss the importance of his or her birth family. We will discuss adoption with openness, love, and respect. Mostly, we'd like to let you know that we will shower our child with love, attention, and laughter every day. Warmest regards, Sue & Patrick.
