Birth Mothers' Voices

Serving Pregnant Women Nationwide

Are you considering making an adoption plan for your child? This is one of the most difficult choices a woman may be faced with. At the law firm of Adams & Romer in San Francisco and Sonoma County, California, we have helped many birth mothers find loving homes for their children. We invite you to read the information below to see what some of our birth mothers have said about the adoption process. Otherwise, please contact us by e-mail at adamsromer@aol.com or by calling 1-800-U-ADOPT-US (1-800-823-6788).

When I found out I was pregnant with my third child I became scared. I had two other kids and I didn’t know what to do. I thought “What am I going to do”? I was too proud to get help from the state. Then I thought of adoption. I didn’t want to give my baby to just anyone. So I made the hard choice to call an adoption attorney in the yellow pages. It’s very hard to have to ask for help from a person whom you don’t know. But Susan was my savior. She and one of her assistants helped me make the toughest decision I ever had to make. They both showed me compassion, care, love and they didn’t judge me.

After my hard choice, Susan helped introduce me to some adoptive parents that I thought would be compatible with the type of parents that my unborn child would need. This is when I met the most wonderful parents for my unborn child. I’m so pleased and so happy and very proud of the adoptive parents because they are doing so well with the child and I still get to be a part of their lives. That is also one of the highlights of working with Susan − you get to make the choice of keeping contact with the adoptive parents and the adopted child.

I have another story about adoption. I didn’t know that as an adult you are still able to get adopted. Susan told me all about it. She even offered to do my adoption with my foster family. I happily accepted the suggestion and now a year later I am adopted and have a family who loves me and cares about me. I will always be grateful to Susan and her staff. She is the most wonderful human being you can ever meet. I have not many words to really describe Susan and her staff. She just knows how to help you in almost any way.

KR, birth mother

Eleven years ago, I found myself unexpectedly pregnant and very determined to provide my child with a loving, stable family. However, I didn’t have the first clue as to what to do. I knew very little about adoption and absolutely nothing about open adoption.

Looking back, I can’t believe I stumbled upon such an incredible advocate for birth moms and adoptive children as Susan Romer. I found her through a simple online search. She met with me in her office and explained open adoption to me. To be honest, I was so filled with shame that I didn’t think contact with my child would be good for her. Susan took the time to educate me on the benefits adoptive children have when there is regular contact with their birth mother.

It would have been so easy for Susan to allow me to believe that closed adoption was better. After all, she had the task of not only educating me but also the adoptive parents. My life and my daughter’s life have been forever changed for the better, thanks to Susan’s gentle guidance.

Even years after my daughter’s placement, I still seek Susan's advice in matters of continuing contact and healthy relationships with my daughter and her adoptive family. Susan is a remarkable woman and a pioneer for healthy, loving open adoptions.
