Our story
At our first meeting 12 years ago, we both knew it was love at first sight. Through time, we have developed a deep-rooted friendship that continues to grow over the years. Our experiences together have helped us to create a solid and stable foundation on which to build a family. We are excited and grateful that we are able to fulfill our dreams of becoming parents through open adoption.
Together we enjoy: snowshoeing in the Sierras with our dogs, hiking in the state park at the end of our street, annual river rafting trips, nature walks, and camping along the California coast. We also love going to the beach, which is only ten minutes away from our house. For entertainment we both enjoy exploring cultural arts festivals, live music and movies. Spending a quiet afternoon reading on our deck or relaxing on the couch is another past time for us. Traveling is a big part of our lives because we love experiencing new places and people. We also love spending time on the weekends with friends and family.
About Mikaela
Mikaela was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She moved to California to get a college education while living on the coast. She enjoys spending her days gardening in the sunshine or working around the house. On the weekends you can find her in the kitchen making an old family recipe or a new dessert. One of Mikaela’s favorite annual events is to go blackberry picking. She loves to fill up as many containers as possible full of berries to bring back home and make her homemade jam.
Mikaela has been a Big Sister Mentor for 8 years and is active in volunteer work in the community. She is currently working part-time in marketing for a local theater company. Her schedule is very flexible providing her a great deal of free time in her daily life. She looks forward to putting her career on hold to become a stay at home mom.
About Mikaela (by Aaron)
Mikaela is thoughtful, insightful and kind. She enjoys laughing and having fun. She has a great love for animals and nature, as well as a passion for food and cooking. She is famous for her delicious desserts. Mikaela is one of those people who will go out of her way to make sure that everyone around her is happy. I feel this quality will make her a very caring and attendant mother.
About Aaron
Aaron grew up in a small town in Northern California near Lake Tahoe. He was raised with an active outdoor lifestyle that included river rafting, camping and snow sports. He still enjoys going snowboarding and snowshoeing in the Sierras every year with the dogs, Yukon and Kenai. Aaron also has a love of classic cars and motorcycles. One of his favorite summertime weekend activities is going to car and motorcycle shows. He looks forward to sharing his hobbies and interests with a child.
Aaron decided to start his own wholesale motorcycle company in 2001. He is an entrepreneur at heart and loves developing small business opportunities. He feels very lucky to be able to work around things that bring him enjoyment on a daily basis. He has the opportunity to maintain a flexible work schedule allowing him extra time to spend with his family.
About Aaron (by Mikaela)
Aaron is a sensitive and grounded person. He is an adventurer wanting to explore everything that life has to offer. Being active outdoors and sharing the same love for nature as I do is one of the reason we have such a great time together. I enjoy watching him make our home and property a comfortable and beautiful place to live. Aaron is one the kindest and most caring people I know who is full of love and patience.
Our Home
We live in a 3 bedroom home on 2 acres with plenty of room for a child to safely explore. Our 2 dogs and 4 cats can usually be found lounging in the sun or looking for someone to play with. We live in a country setting in the Santa Cruz Mountains about 10 miles out of town. There is a state park across the street that provides endless hiking trails for the entire family. The beach is only 10 minutes away allowing us to enjoy regular outings. The best aspect about our neighborhood is it’s strong sense of community filled with diverse families and children of all ages.
Our Families
Family is very important to us and we are always learning many things from different members of our diverse family. We have 5 loving parents who look forward to being grandparents and having a grandchild. Aaron's mom was born in Vietnam and lived in France for a portion of her childhood. She was adopted as an infant, which gives us great insight and understanding about adoption. Aaron’s dad writes children’s books and is a professional storyteller so there will be no end to the collection of books and stories written and told by him.
Mikaela’s side of the family is originally from New York and through the years has spread to Arizona, Florida and California. Mikaela’s parents plan on moving to Santa Cruz in the next few years so that they will be closer to their grandchild. Because of our close relationships with both sides of our families, we spend most, if not all, holidays together celebrating our family traditions. Our 4 grandparents are looking forward to becoming great-grandparents, and our uncles, aunts and cousins are excited as well to welcome a little one into the family.
Our Values
We believe a child should always know that they are loved unconditionally. We will continuously encourage him or her to develop and explore their individual strengths and talents. We feel it is important to teach a child to value family, education, and respect for self and others. Providing a loving, nurturing, active and happy home filled with family and friends is our promise to you and the child you are expecting. We want you to know that we are committed to the wonderful benefits that open adoption brings.
