David and JP
Dear Expectant Mother
Thank you for taking the time to read about us, and about the family we hope to create. We both feel very lucky and blessed to be living at a time when we can fall deeply in love, nurture a relationship, and create a beautiful and loving family of our own. We hope that you, too — in this short introduction — will get to know us, and can imagine the same possibilities for us as we strive to build the family we’ve always wanted.
About Us
We are both 39 years old, born a little over a month apart. We met in Los Angeles ten years ago, fell in love (almost in a heartbeat), and have lived and shared our lives together ever since. We now call San Francisco home, after having moved and bought a house here in 2000. We live in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco, and spend many of our weekends in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where we have a second home.
We both feel fortunate to live and work in San Francisco, which we consider to be one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world. In a way, our mutual love of this city is emblematic of the similarities between us. We share many of the same beliefs, likes, and dislikes, and this makes it incredibly easy for us to be the best of friends: the type of friends that like to spend every minute together, and who, as the saying goes, can practically finish each other’s sentences. We love to laugh (sometimes at ourselves), and treasure the time we spend with family and friends.
We enjoy exploring big cities and the countryside. We travel to the East Coast every year to visit museums, watch plays and musicals on Broadway, and discover local treasures that aren't mentioned in the guidebooks. Our trips always include taking a long walk, having a relaxing lunch, and maybe even some shopping. On weekends, we drive up to our second home, where we can wander through the many small towns, meet and interact with local residents, and learn about the gold rush, the mining towns, and early California history. The house sits on five acres of land, where a small family of deer, who live in the nearby trees, graze on the hill behind the house. Jackrabbits, squirrels, blue-jays, and woodpeckers can be spotted from every window. When we barbecue with friends on the patio, the sounds of nature help to calm and relax us.
About JP
JP was born and raised in San Diego. His parents emigrated from the Philippines to the US in the late 1950s. JP grew up in a large, close-knit family, with many cousins, aunts, and uncles who gathered together every weekend for an abundance of great food, fun, and conversation. JP attended UC Berkeley and the University of Washington, and graduated with a degree in Fine Art. He’s a creative person, and expresses his talent through graphic design, multimedia, and video. He’s worked for some really fun companies including The Walt Disney Company, and The Jim Henson Company. He now works from home for Match.com as Creative Director. We believe that JP’s flexible work schedule will come in handy once we have a baby. JP’s other passions are volleyball, reading, and cooking. He makes a great pot roast, and is always experimenting with new recipes. His mom and dad — as well as his sister Lisa, her husband Bob, and their three children Kendra (6), Dalton (5), and Maren (2) — also live in San Francisco, only about two miles away.
About David
David was born and raised in Connecticut. He grew up on a goat and horse farm in the rural eastern part of the state. His family also lived in Puerto Rico for a few years, where he attended school and learned Spanish. He has two sisters, as well as a nephew Eric (7) and niece Tess (6). David graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina with a degree in Economics, and is currently a Vice President at Wells Fargo Bank. His passions include tennis, running, and travel, and he still has a soft spot for all animals, especially newborns. He’s also run a few marathons, which will help him to keep up with the children. David’s immediate family is now located in several states — Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. His parents are thrilled at the idea of having another grandchild, and plan on moving to San Francisco as soon as he or she arrives.
Our Family
One of the things that will make our home special is that we are both extremely dedicated to the idea of family. Both of us had extraordinarily happy childhoods, with supportive parents and value-based upbringings. (Incidentally, both sets of our parents are still together after more than 40 years of marriage; they serve as great role models.) Creating a happy, nurturing environment for children will be like second nature to us.
Through our 10 years together, our families have grown very close, and we all regularly visit and travel together. In fact, the children we raise will be a part of one family, not two: a family made up of two sets of grandparents, three aunts, and many cousins. The children that become part of our family will have a tremendous amount of love and support all around them. In our case — as two Dads — we are grateful to have many strong women in the family to lend continued support and guidance.
Our Beliefs
We believe that family is the most important thing. We were both raised with Christian values, and we believe children should learn honesty, kindness, forgiveness, and respect. We believe children should have a well-rounded education, experience other cultures, appreciate diversity, and respect traditions.
We have wanted to raise children for as long as we can remember, and we know that we are emotionally and financially ready to do so. As parents, we are eager to accept the opportunities and challenges that raising children will bring. We know that we have a lot of experience behind us, and all the family and support we need to begin this next exciting chapter of our lives.
