Dear Expectant Mother,

Hi!  We are Ilana and Sharon from San Francisco, California. We imagine that this is a difficult time for you and we want to thank you for considering us as possible adoptive parents.  Almost two years ago we had the incredible experience of adopting our son, Micha, through an open adoption.  We worked closely with Micha’s birth mother and now stay in contact with her through e-mails and phone calls. We would like to complete our family with a second child for us to love.

Micha has changed our lives in such a profound way.  We both love being parents and have found tremendous support in our friends and families.  Having experienced parenthood, we know that we want a second child.  We will provide for another child as we have for Micha a loving, stable and nurturing environment full of opportunities to explore, grow and develop to their fullest potential.

About Us
We met nine years ago through a friend and had a commitment ceremony five years ago in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to celebrate our love for each other.  Over one hundred of our family and friends helped us celebrate.  We are a happy and stable couple who love to hike, bike, travel, cook, garden in our backyard and visit with family and friends.

On weekends you can find us at our neighborhood farmers market buying fresh fruit and vegetables and listening to music with other families and their children.  We might also be enjoying the morning at the playground near our house where our neighbors and their children also play or in our backyard gardening.  Traveling is also another past time that we love to do as a family.  We take an annual ski trip to Tahoe, a trip to New York City to visit Sharon’s family, to Boston to visit Ilana’s brother and kids and to Northern California and Oregon to simply enjoy nature.  Other favorite trips are with Ilana’s sister who has a pool and to visit Ilana’s mother.  We usually spend Thanksgiving in New York with Sharon’s father and over 40 aunts, uncles, and cousins.  It is a huge eating extravaganza and a time to catch up with everyone.

As parents, we work together as a team taking care of Micha and are both actively involved in his day-to-day care. Sharon is the super organized one who remembers to pack everything we need for an excursion and Ilana is the one who is more spontaneous and who gets up early in the morning with Micha.

We were so lucky to find each other and then to have Micha join our family.  We can’t wait to share our lives with another child.

Ilana about Sharon
Sharon is my best friend, a brilliant attorney, a wonderful life partner and an amazing mother.  One of the things I love about Sharon is her contagious laughter.  Sharon is one of those people who makes things happen.  Whether we need to fix something around the house, plan a trip, or create a meal, she will figure out the problem and find a great solution.

Sharon is a long distance cyclist and loves to read in her spare time.  Sharon inspires me to reach my full potential and try things I never thought I would like.  When we first met, I was afraid to bike in the city.  Sharon encouraged me to try it, and we now both commute to work on bike.  We take Micha on trips with us in his burley that attaches to the back of the bike.

Sharon grew up in Brooklyn, New York and had many adventures before settling in California.  She traveled and volunteered in Guatemala where she learned to speak Spanish and volunteered in an orphanage. Her passion for social justice issues led Sharon to law school.  She now owns and operates a small immigration law firm in San Francisco where she helps people who are fleeing their home countries for fear for their lives.  Sharon works part time so that she can take care of Micha and she looks forward to taking time off again to spend time with the new baby.  In time, she will return to work part time so that she can have more time with both children.

Sharon about Ilana
Ilana is warm, loving and funny.  Whenever I am down, she finds the right thing to say to cheer me up and make me laugh.  She is very nurturing and extremely giving of herself.  She loves to cook and her favorite dishes include fresh vegetable soup and pasta with tomato sauce.  Ilana is sharing her passion for cooking with Micha who helps her make pancakes in the mornings.

For my thirty-fifth birthday, Ilana put together a surprise party for me.  I truly had no idea what she was planning right up until we arrived at the restaurant and our friends were there with balloons and gifts!

Originally from the Los Angeles area, Ilana grew up near the beach. While in college, Ilana worked as a camp counselor for young teens.  After she graduated, she became the Program Director where she got the chance to work with children of all ages. She taught swimming, created art projects and led discussion groups.  Ilana has been creating the same type of quality activities for Micha while also teaching him to swim.

Ilana is now a managing partner of a law firm. Ilana’s business partner and close friend, Norman, has three boys.  We spend the holidays with Norman and his family.  Ilana is also the god mother of Norman’s youngest son, Isaac, who is now five, and an excellent baseball player.  Ilana goes to as many Giants games as she can squeeze in and of course, Micha has already been to his first baseball game.

Micha
Micha entered our family at birth in November 2005.  He is a happy, social, affectionate, loving little boy who will make a great big brother.  Music and swim classes are but just a few of the activities that Micha loves.  As he grows, we can’t wait to teach Micha to ride a bike, to ski and to share our love of the outdoors and nature with him.

Our Home
We live in a four-bedroom house on a quiet safe street in San Francisco with our two cats, Minouche & Witte. Our home is close to public transportation, schools, stores and several playgrounds.  We have a large playroom off of the kitchen and a family room downstairs that leads to our garden. Both will be wonderful places for Micha and a baby to play together.  We are fortunate to live in a very friendly, supportive and diverse neighborhood with children of all ages.

We take Micha to the children’s museum five minutes from our house where he can pet the animals and play with in an interactive museum setting.  We also attend the neighborhood park festival and block party each year.  Halloween is a big event in our neighborhood with over a hundred kids in costumes trick or treating.

Our Values
We believe we are able to provide a loving, positive and stimulating environment to our children, just as our parents did for us.  We will encourage our children an interest in exploration of life and in learning how to grow in being an honest, caring and thoughtful person through our examples.  Being active participants in our family will be an important part of our daily routines and we will teach a sense of responsibility to family, community and the environment.  Micha already helps to clean up his toys and wash his hands before meals.  We can also provide a bilingual environment and Micha is already learning English and Spanish. We hope that he and his sibling will be fluent in both languages.  Encouraging another little one as we have for Micha to develop a love of reading and education as well as the enjoyment for outdoor activities, including biking, skiing, hiking and travel will be just a few of our priorities as parents.
