Jim and Larry
We are Jim and Larry from San Francisco. We are very excited about becoming parents, and are grateful for your consideration. We believe that open adoption is a wonderful way to start a family. As a two-dad family, it is especially important to us that our child have a connection with his or her birth mother. We welcome ongoing contact with you as he or she grows up, and are open to whatever level of contact feels comfortable to you. We have been in a committed relationship for six years, and we are each other's best friend. We both come from tight-knit families and love spending time with them. Our belief in strong family relationships is one of the values that drew us together. We both love kids, and look forward to building a family of our own. Our parents and siblings are thrilled that we're doing so. We like to spend time with friends, listen to music (music is always playing in our house), go to movies, watch comedy shows and sports on TV, and play cards together. In addition to our frequent East Coast trips to visit family, we love to travel and have explored many destinations. We have especially enjoyed our trips to Mexico and Hawaii. We are both avid readers, and are looking forward to adding Dr. Seuss to our book collection.
Jim works as a landscape architect who designs parks, museum grounds, and other outdoor areas with a firm he has been with for ten years. He volunteers as a tour guide at our local botanical garden for elementary school field trips, and enjoys introducing the children to interesting plants, curious squirrels, and odd-looking bugs. He is a former Boy Scout, and continues to enjoy the outdoors and exploring the natural world. Jim's hobbies include photography and painting, and he continues to take art classes. His mother was a music teacher, and Jim played trombone for ten years when he was growing up. He is also a college football fan, having gone to Notre Dame like his dad. Jim is an adventurous cook who likes finding new recipes to make when we entertain friends. While growing up, Jim and his family moved 11 times before Jim graduated from high school. As a result, he has had a lot of practice making new friends and exploring new places. He's the oldest child in his family, and has two younger sisters with whom he is very close. One of Jim's sisters lives in the Boston area with her husband and four young sons (ages 5, 7, 9 and 11); the other sister lives in South Florida with her husband and three young sons (ages 1, 3 and 5). Jim's parents are recently retired and live on the coast of Maine where they keep busy with their many hobbies and frequent traveling. Every summer, the whole family converges at Jim's parents' house in Maine where we love to go kayaking, sailing, hiking, and walking into town for a scoop of ice cream with our nephews. We get together again with Jim's family for Thanksgiving, hosted by Jim's sister outside Boston.
More about Larry Larry was born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina. His parents, who are both retired, still live there in the house where he grew up. Larry has an older sister who also lives in Raleigh with her three school-aged sons (ages 8, 12 and 14). Larry is very close to his family, and they talk several times per week. Larry is an attorney who works on business disputes involving large companies. He also volunteers for an organization that finds free legal help for people who cannot afford to hire a lawyer. Larry is a big college basketball fan, and roots for the University of North Carolina, where he attended college. He also follows NBA basketball, and occasionally attends games of our local team, the Golden State Warriors. Larry has a silly sense of humor, is a fan of the old "Airplane" movies, the Simpsons, and Wanda Sykes. He likes listening to music and his taste ranges from Mary J. Blige (his current favorite) to classic rock. Larry also enjoys solving Sudoku and logic puzzles and reading the Harry Potter books. Every year, we take a summer vacation with Larry's extended family to the North Carolina coast. Larry was a competitive swimmer in high school, and has taught his nephews the fun of swimming in the ocean, body surfing and boogie boarding. At the beach, we enjoy tossing the football and collecting shells with our nephews, taking them to play miniature golf and drive go-carts, and eating hush puppies and "shrimp burgers." We also make a second trip each year to see Larry's family in North Carolina, usually around a holiday or a special celebration. City Life We live on a hilly street in a great San Francisco neighborhood, close to parks and playgrounds. We love city life, and our child will be raised in an interesting environment, learn to ride subways and cable cars, be introduced to a diverse group of neighbors, foods, and classmates, and will enjoy a lot of fun activities. We live in a classic old San Francisco house and have recently finished an extensive renovation. We especially love the large kitchen, since we cook a lot. Jim's blueberry pancakes and chocolate chip cookies are especially popular. Our neighborhood has several good schools, parks, and playgrounds, a movie theater and two ice cream stores — all within walking distance of our house. We live near many of our friends with children and are excited about having play dates. We live with two cats, Simon and Zoe. Simon likes to make sure that we don't sleep late on weekends. Zoe's life goal is finding a place to sleep on or next to Larry. Country Life As much as we enjoy living in the city, we also enjoy spending weekends in Healdsburg, a small town in Sonoma County that is about 75 miles north of San Francisco. We have a weekend house there that we share with two other friends on a rotating basis. In the summer, we visit the local farmer's market, kayak or canoe on the river, and barbecue with friends. In the winter, we gather around the fireplace and read and play games. It's a great way to spend time with our friends and their kids.
When we begin the responsibilities of parenthood, Jim will leave his job to be a full-time stay-at-home dad. As parents, we plan to provide a good education, and teach respect for others and for the environment. We plan to introduce our child to art, music, sports, diverse food, and foreign cultures — while giving the child enough freedom to develop his or her own tastes, styles and interests. We will guide a child to exercise good judgment, yet provide enough independence for him or her to make their own decisions, even if it means learning from mistakes. We will teach that trying is more important than winning, and we will always be there with encouragement. In Closing We know that you want the best for your child, and we thank you for considering us. We will provide a lifetime of love and support from us, as well as love and support from our extended families. We look forward to creating a life of happiness and joy for a child.
