Marybeth and Amory

Dear Expectant Mother,

Hello from Amory and Marybeth. We admire your courage and strength in considering adoption. We would love to have the chance to meet and to get to know you better. We have been happily married for over five years, and welcoming a child into our lives is our greatest wish.

About Us
Our story begins in New York City, where good friends introduced us. As soon as we met, we realized that we have a similar sense of humor (we both laugh a lot!) and like many of the same things – including spicy food, running marathons, and exploring new places. We fell in love right away. We are best friends, and we share many values including helping others and approaching life with optimism.

We moved to San Francisco, California several years ago and have made the Bay Area our home. We spend time together hiking, going to museums and movies, and sharing meals with friends and family. A typical Saturday or Sunday includes going on a bike ride together by the water followed by barbequing with friends in our backyard and playing board games (Scrabble and Pictionary are favorites).

We love to travel, especially when it involves a little adventure! Some favorite memories are of a trip to Africa, where we had the incredible opportunity to see giraffes and elephants up close. We look forward to sharing our love of travel and learning about other cultures with a child.

Marybeth describes Amory
Amory, my husband and best friend, is very funny, kind, and smart. He is easy going and a gentleman – Amory is the first to give up his seat on a bus and to hold a door open for someone. He has an upbeat personality and when we walk in our neighborhood or do errands, Amory always chats with neighbors and store owners. His knowledge of music and current events amazes me, and we never run out of conversation.

Amory was born and raised in New York City and remains a very loyal NY Yankees and Giants fan. He loves sports, has a lot of energy, and has completed five marathons. Amory was a DJ after college and music is usually playing in our home. Growing up, he spent summers at the beach with his parents and brother where he learned to fish and swim. Amory never misses a chance to go to the beach and jump in the ocean.

Since graduating from college, Amory has worked at museums and theaters because of his love for art and culture. Currently he works at a local museum, where he raises money for their exhibits and programs. The museum offers classes for children to create their own paintings, and he is excited to take advantage of these fun activities with a child. Amory works close to home, so he is home very early in the evening. He often cooks dinner, and I highly recommend his corn chowder, pizza, and stir-fry.

Amory is a fantastic uncle – he loves throwing a football around with our nephew and helping our niece to identify constellations in the night sky. He also plays a great game of peek-a-boo. I know that he will be a wonderful father.

Amory describes Marybeth
When I met Marybeth, I was immediately attracted by her great smile and sense of humor. Marybeth is adventurous and loves to plan trips and see new things. She always remembers special occasions, and hosts many birthday parties at our home. Eating is a highlight of these gatherings, and Marybeth makes delicious apple pies and cheesecakes. She is known for her enthusiasm for holidays and for pulling together creative Halloween costumes. Marybeth has a big collection of Christmas ornaments from her childhood and decorating our tree with them is a treasured family tradition.

Marybeth grew up in New Jersey with two older brothers. As a child, she spent a lot of time outdoors – riding bikes and climbing trees. Marybeth loves to learn new things. After college, she went to graduate school and taught economics to university students. Everyone in her family plays a musical instrument, and Marybeth plays flute and piccolo and is learning piano

Having a positive impact on the community is important to Marybeth. She works at a non-profit organization in San Francisco and focuses on reducing the nursing shortage in local hospitals. She is passionate about helping others and has always been an active volunteer – from delivering hot meals to senior citizens to building houses with Habitat for Humanity. Our niece and nephew love spending time with Aunt Marybeth, and she is a terrific godmother to her five year old goddaughter.

Family and Friends
We love spending time with our families. Amory’s brother and his wife have two children. Marybeth has a large extended family (including 31 cousins!). We are both close to our mothers and see and speak with them frequently. One of our favorite traditions is an annual beach vacation with our families. We spend a week barbequing hamburgers and hotdogs, swimming, playing miniature golf, doing jigsaw puzzles, and laughing. We cannot wait to include our child in these vacations.

We often have friends over for informal gatherings (including a party each year to watch the Oscars and cheer for our favorite movies), during which we cook large quantities of chili or lasagna. Most of our friends have young children (several who have adopted), and we love spending time together. Everyone is thrilled by our decision to adopt.

Our Home Life
We live in a cheerful home in a great San Francisco neighborhood with lots of families and children. We chose our neighborhood because we think it will be a great place for a child to grow up. We are within walking distance of two playgrounds, The Exploratorium (a great science museum for kids), and a public library. Our neighborhood is perfect for walks in the stroller along the bay which has a lot of space for kids to play in the sand and fly kites.

Our home is spacious and sunny, with lots of room for toys and playing. Our backyard has room for a sandbox and swing set. We have a big cheerful kitchen, which will be great for baking cookies together. We plan to be very hands-on parents – playing games and organizing play-dates and trips to the beach. We cannot wait to read bedtime stories to a child, including our favorite childhood books -Corduroy and James and the Giant Peach. We value creativity and will provide a wonderful education for a child. As parents, we will provide a loving and happy environment filled with music, sports, and laughter and will share our values of kindness and helping others with a child.
